U11 Mighty Mullets into grand final!!!

Congratulations to the Ballina Mullets U11 team who won their major semi final against Alstonville on Saturday and so go straight into the Grand Final on Saturday September 11 (time to be advised). This is the first time in a while a Ballina junior team has made a Grand Final and your support will be needed to help cheer them on! More details will be published as they become available.

Three other Ballina junior teams played in the minor semi finals for their age divisions on the weekend and gave it their all in some extremely competitive matches. In the U11s, Ballina Seahorses were pipped at the post by Coraki (awesome stuff having both Ballina U11s make the semis though!); the U13s saw Alstonville snatch a win over Ballina with a goal in the final minutes of the match; and the U15 Ballina Seagulls team put in a brave effort against Northern Star, but were unable to craft a win.

Every single team member is to be congratulated for their efforts and improvement over the season, and for an exciting semi finals performance. Thank you also to all the coaches who put in many hours behind the scenes so our kids can enjoy hockey. We hope you all come back again next year and can benefit from the club having its own astroturf.

A great individual performance was also put in by JJ Parker with the whistle when he was assessed for his HockeyEd Community Umpiring badge on the weekend – he passed with flying colours of course! Excellent stuff JJ… no doubt the first of many of our talented Junior umpires to get through.

Clean sweep for Ballina vet women at state trials

This weekend we had 6 Ballina women attend the state trials in Newcastle. The ‘girls’ have done us proud with all selected in their respective age groups. Travelling in October to the National championships in Canberra will be Alison Porter and Helen Jarvie in the over 40′s, Kerry Humphries in the over 45′s, Sue Hunter in the over 50′s and Sue Miller and Chris Eather in the over 55′s. A remarkable effort ladies and congratulations! This will be the first time Al Porter, Kerry Humphries and Sue Hunter will be representing the state.

Holly makes it into NSW U13s!

Holly Anderson headed down to Newcastle recently with the FNC U13s-1 team for the northern half state championships. On the strength of her performance at the championships, Holly was named in a squad of 35 girls to go to Moorebank to try out for the NSW u13 team the following weekend. It was a very demanding trial, with 4 games on Saturday and 3 on Sunday, where Holly was playing right wing & centre forward. At the end of these matches, Holly was named in the team and she is now looking forward to competing at the u13 invitational championship in Maryborough, Queensland from 4-9 October 2010.

Full NSW U13s team list

Congratulations Holly! Not only are your parents rightly very proud of your achievements, so is the whole club and we wish you all the best!

U13 girls reps head to Newcastle

This weekend will see our U13 FNC representative team, with Ballina girls Lily Cronin, Holly Anderson, Cassie McDonald, Ella Heskett and Savannah Daley in FNC1 and Cori Hardy in FNC2, traveling to Newcastle to take on the best teams from the northern parts of NSW in the half state championships. Play hard but fair girls and you will do us all proud. Best of luck!

Great effort from our U13 boys reps

Our U13 rep players entertained spectators with some very skilful hockey over the weekend.

FNC1

The first game of the tournament saw FNC 1 go down to Sydney1 2-0 in an entertaining match where the boys gave their all.  Sydney went on to win the tournament 3-1 over Tamworth.

In their second game FNC 1 scored a very convincing win over New England 7 nil with some great teamwork.

Their last pool game was against Grafton1 whom had lost 10 nil earlier in the day to Sydney  so the boys went into the game fairly confident…. but maybe too confident.  FNC had to draw or win to progress to the finals to play off for 1st or 2nd.  Unfortunately their teamwork from the previous 2 matches deserted them and they went down 1 nil in a game they should have won.

On Sunday the boys played off for fifth and sixth and showed their tremendous ability and fighting spirit after their loss to Grafton when they thumped Manning Valley 8 nil.

Team members Jared & Tyler Arundell representing Ballina both played their hearts out in a very talented team.  This was a great experience for Tyler to play against players of this ability as he is only 10.

[Editor's note: FNC 1 had the second best defensive record of all Div 1 teams, only conceding 3 goals during the whole tournament - excellent stuff boys!].

FNC2

The FNC2 team (coached by Neil Stone) had a 1-0 win first game over Grafton 2, a 0-0 draw against Nepean and a 0-0 draw against Coffs Coast (even though Dylan Stone scored a beautiful goal from a short corner that the umpire disallowed as they said it was outside the circle…  but that’s hockey!).  On Sunday, FNC2 went down 3-0 after a mighty battle with Sydney 2.  Sydney 2 came first in that pool and FNC2 came second.  Only first place in the pool  in second division went through to the final.

Well done to Dylan Stone and Josh Moore (younger brother of Chris and Adam) – a great effort! The boys all played their hearts out for the whole tournament – 9 out of 15 players were under 11!!  Playing against some of the other Under 13 teams they looked tiny but they played like champions.

Check out the pics of FNC2 in our photo gallery….. hopefully we will have some FNC1 pics coming soon.
